Marking the 69th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution and freedom fight of 1956, the Hungarian Embassy in Zagreb hosted a reception in Hotel Sheraton for a wide range of guests, having H.E. Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Minister of Defence of Hungary and Tomislav Galić, State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Croatia, as guests of honour. In his welcoming words H.E. Dr Csaba Demcsák, Ambassador of Hungary to Croatia recalled the areas of intensive bilateral relations of Hungary and Croatia.
H.E. Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Minister of Defence of Hungary in his speech recalled the importance of the 1956 Hungarian revolution and freedom fight for the European democratic values, that enabled for us to live today in freedom and sovereignty. He reminded the importance of regional cooperation and the close cooperation of Hungary and Croatia as members of NATO and the European Union. State Secretary Tomislav Galić highlighted the excellent cooperation of our countries and that the two-day visit of the Hungarian Minister of Defence in Croatia aims to strengthen and deepen our collaboration in the area of military trainings and defence industry.
As a tribute to the memory of the 1956 Hungarian freedom fight, the water columns of the fountain (Fontane Zagreb) at the National University Library, on the night of 23 October were traditionally covered in the national tricolours of the Hungarian flag.
